FAQs About LinkedIn Sign On Process

Q: Why am I being asked to sign into HBSANC with my LinkedIn username and password?

A: Because HBSANC and HBS are concerned about privacy and accuracy in the alumni database we share. Proper login security protects the privacy of everyone in the database. A single sign for each individual is necessary to properly track membership, attendance and importantly avoid duplicate profile information. It eliminates need to have unnecessary additional credentials

Q: What data is being shared with LinkedIn?

A: None other than the fact that you logged in to a LinkedIn Partner site. Data is flowing from LinkedIn to HBSANC platform not in the reverse.

Q: Is HBSANC being paid to feature LinkedIn?

A: No.

Q: Do your store LinkedIn credentials?

A: No. HiveBrite does not store LinkedIn credentials. Your browser should be saving your passwords. You can bookmark the HBSANC site and allow your browser to store your LinkedIn credentials for the HBSANC site. This makes it very easy to use.

Q: Where did the data come from that was initially in my profile?

A: Contact info and education data came from HBS iModules database. LinkedIn synchronizes the following: last and first name, profile picture, summary, current position(s), company
and industry (if specified in LinkedIn)
When the user synchronizes his/her profile with LinkedIn, a pop-up window will appear with the info retrieved from LinkedIn. If this company field remains blank the user can add a new company and its details.
You can edit out anything you do not want to synch.
If you want to know more about it, there is an article about LinkedIn synchronization: https://developer.linkedin.com/docs/fields/basic-profile

Q: What are the advantages to LinkedIn login?

A: HBSANC considered other many options and chose LinkedIn because:

LinkedIn is a secure robust solution reviewed with HBS MIS at the highest levels to ensure we match the alumni terms of use and protect the alumni database.  Majority of people have a LinkedIn account with their login credentials saved on their devices so they do not need to remember passwords in most cases LinkedIn already has most people’s professional profile information so it makes it simpler for people to not have to re-enter current professional information LinkedIn’s sunlight verified public data is usable for HBS alumni to search for people in and filter by Company and Industry with up to date info

Q: Why does HBSANC sometimes require a Captcha robot check?

A: This is a LinkedIn security requirement When security risks are higher, given our focus on security of the alumni database, this is to prevent robot created profiles and hacking of the database.

Q: Why did HBSANC not develop its own security log in protocol and single sign on technology?

A: This is a very difficult engineering problem give current security challenges on the Internet which is beyond our resources and those of our platform provider. This is a challenge even for HBS.

Q: Is there any way to sign on without LinkedIn credentials?

A: Not at this time.

Q: Why am I being asked to share my credit card information with Stripe?

A: Stripe is our preferred credit card processor and provides technology to make subsequent purchases much easier. It is a liability for organizations to store constituents’ sensitive data like credit card information and Stripe is rated most secure in the payment gateway industry.
